Vis Dev - Illustration - Contrast (for Procreate Art Prize 2019)

I am finished within 3 days of the deadline! This time I gave myself the luxury of time and got anatomy studies along with gesture drawings before I even go to thumbnailing for the piece. I splurged in character exploration to best determine their poses. I thought up beach stories in my head as I chose different color palettes I am happy to finally be able to share it all.

The contest´s idea was "contrast". I looked for contrast in story (each kid has their own personal reaction to the wave), contrast in value, contrast in warm/cool, and contrast in edge.

The final piece. Contrast in story (each kid as their own personal reaction to the wave), contrast in value, contrast in warm/cool, and contrast in edge.

Here´s the scared boy, the protagonist of the piece. I wanted an awkward running pose, I was on the right track, but none of these gestures made it to the final illustration.

The cool kid, I can´t get enough.

That´s me in my childhood, upside down or jumping up and down. Exploring skin hues was incredibly fun, so much range for choices!

The complete lineart. The crushing waterfall was quite fun to get done, the feeling of the rolling wave.

Color thumbnail explorations, contrast in value is first, then warmth against cool.
